The last decade has seen many exciting advances in the field of molecular pathology and its applications, and the Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) recognizes the important role that molecular pathology plays in increasing our knowledge of toxicologic pathology. In 2022, the formation of a special interest group in molecular pathology (MP SIG) was approved by the STP to promote awareness among, provide continued education to, and perform scientific outreach to, practicing scientists, professional societies, and regulatory bodies. By bringing together subject matter experts in this subspecialty across industry, government and academia, this SIG can identify and promote best practices pertaining to representative applications of the science and technology of molecular pathology across sectors. These objectives would be mainly achieved by publishing original research and contemporary review articles within a Special Issue on Molecular Pathology in the STP's Toxicologic Pathology Journal. Such a publication will serve as a central resource and reference with the most up to date information related to this field.

The special issue will focus on the practice of molecular pathology as it applies to the greater discipline of toxicologic pathology. Key topics to be covered include conventional and advanced techniques of spatial (cell and tissue based) molecular pathology (e.g., immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, multiplex IHCs, spatial-omics, molecular imaging etc.) and their applications to target discovery, validation, expression profiling, and investigative studies. There will be an emphasis on how value is added to the experimental design and method development (reagent and sample selection), quality control, data interpretation/reporting, and corroborative assays with examples of how these workflows have been successfully applied to expand our understanding of pathophysiology as well as mechanistic investigations for safety assessment of therapeutics.
