Tissue from 6 Month Old Male Sprague-Dawley Rat

SIGNALMENT: 

6 month old male Sprague-Dawley rat

HISTORY:

1 week oral toxicity study. Exposed daily (5 days/week) to 4mg ochratoxin A PO in corn oil per kg body weight (NTP Protocol). Euthanized 8 days after initiation of treatment.

MORPHOLOGIC DIAGNOSI(E)S AND ETIOLOGY: 

Renal tubular epithelial necrosis.

Caption: Tubular epithelium ranges from normal to attenuated.  Numerous cells have hypereosinophilia and pyknosis; some are rounded and free within tubular lumens.

Caption: Prominent morphologic evidence of necrosis and degeneration (cell swelling) are seen in the remaining epithelial cells of these renal tubules.  Attenuation of remaining epithelium is pronounced.
